Early Roadblocks

Writer's picture: Ryan BattRyan Batt

Last week I talked about how I began to research for ISM, but this week is where the bulk of it really began. As a part of the class, I needed to compile an annotated bibliography with five sources related to my topic.

Finding Articles

With my first week, it was really easy to find articles, but this week due to the theoretical nature of music theory and the changing nature of the field, it can be harder to find sources beyond the initial few I found previously. This is where I had a breakthrough though when I found the Society for Music Theory which is a well studied and respected magazine that analyses many aspects of both modern and traditional music theory. Most of my sources were from regular articles, but finding this database will be crucial for my future research as I'll be able to use its many resources to further my knowledge.

My Findings

This week the magazine provided what may be my strongest source to help out early on in the process. In this study, they analyze popular rock music from the past 70 years to find common chord patterns. Right now, my main focus is this research so as this continues in the next week, I'll work with my new sources to find even stronger data to base my next steps off of.
