This week in ISM, now that the Professional Symposium has happened, we are branching out to interact with professionals and beginning to think about how we will interact with our field.
Contacting
First, we need to work to schedule interviews with professionals. Right now, I have some clear contacts that I should reach out to. First of all, the professional I met at the symposium would be an incredible resource, so I plan on scheduling an interview with him. From there, I hope to learn of any contacts he has in the field that would be good for me to talk to. He gave a lot of feedback with recording music, which has been a less focused on aspect of my topic, but would be major in enhancing the quality and significance of the work I do. Also, I'm beginning to reach out to popular arrangers such as Soon Hee Newbold and Brian Balmages who are core to high school orchestra repertoire and are very well published. The other method of focus I'm looking at right now involves reaching out to music professors through LinkedIn and phone calls.
Original Work
This week, we also need to consider what we want to do to show our research for the first semester. With music, this works really well. I've researched a lot about different kinds of music and the actual process of arranging, so my current thought is to utilize this to arrange contrasting pieces. From here, I'd like to record the music I arrange in order to capture the full grasp of my research as it pertains to timbre and expressiveness.
I have a lot to look forward to as I move into the professional and application portion of this class, so I'm looking forward to what I learn in this process!
