With the research of the past few weeks, I was drawn to topic theory and timbre as musical concepts. Because of this, my decision for my topic proposal this year was clear. In my topic proposal for ISM this year, I want to explore how emotion is conveyed in music through these concepts specifically.
Professionalism
This week we reviewed the resumes of other ISM students for consistent standards in professionalism. In this, it helped me a lot to consider how mine could be improved beyond the feedback I received. We have the Professional Symposium in a couple weeks, which I'm looking forward to because I feel like I will learn many valuable lessons of professionalism.
Current and Future Research
This week, I researched music in a fantasy setting which was extremely helpful. The article I found was great in how it used multiple topics that work together in order to form a more specific and practical description of how topic theory is used. Moving forward I want to take a deeper look into this with how multiple topics are used together as well as how they are used in conjunction with timbre.
Next Steps Forward
With the new knowledge I got from my research this week, I want to take a deep look at specific soundtracks where this can be applied. This week, this included the soundtrack of Edward Scissorhands, but moving forward I want to take a more focused look at the soundtracks of Over the Garden Wall and Outer Wilds to really view how all of these aspects work together.
