Preparations

Writer's picture: Ryan BattRyan Batt

Last week, alongside the weekly research of the class, one of our main focuses was preparing for the business symposium this coming Thursday. This consisted of placing final touches on my résumé, preparing our elevator pitches, and practicing interviews to get ready for a live environment.

Research

For my research this week, I continued down the path that I’ve been taken down of topic theory and musical timbres. The article I found this week was extremely helpful, critiquing ideas of how both topic theory and timbres influence music and synthesizing their functions to offer a more cohesive view of how they interact. This path has been very helpful for how deeper qualities to music are brought forward and I will now need to become more specialized in the information I research to address new questions as they rise and can’t be answered by the foundation I’ve already built.

Professionalism

This week’s professionalism exercises have been extremely helpful for me. Interviews have felt surprisingly comfortable, but as I prepare for professional interviews I now know I will need to make sure I address my level of explanation that I include in the conversations I have based on my audience. For interviews with other students, I’ve had to explain quite a few premises which will be needed to an extent even when talking to professionals, but to a far lesser extent. Overall, though, I’m really looking forward to the professional aspect of this class now that I feel a level of comfort in this environment.
